High School Programming Contest

The department of Computer Science and Systems Analysis hosted its 22nd annual high school programming contest on April 19, 2008. Twenty-six teams participated from the following high schools: Lakota West, Lakota East, Loveland, St. Xavier, Sycamore, Carmel (Indiana), Park Tudor (Indiana), Bellbrook, William Mason. Teams from Park Tudor, St. Xavier, and William Mason finished first, second and third, respectively. General Dynamics’ generous donation allowed us to award the top-placing teams Best-Buy gift cards.

Our programming contest requires teams of 4 students to solve programming problems using one computer. Teams read descriptions of problems and write computer programs to solve as many problems as they can in 4 hours. The supported languages include Java, C++, C#, J#, and Visual Basic. During the contest, teams submit their programs to judges who verify its correctness; teams receive a penalty for incorrect submissions. Teams are ranked according to the number of problems solved, with ties broken by the speed in which the problems were solved. Read more about the background and history of the contest.

This outreach event is one of longest running programming contests geared toward high school students. During this time, well over 1000 students have participated as contestants, with many of them participating several years in a row.

If you are a high school student or a teacher and would like to learn more about participating in the contest, please contact the department at 513-529-0340 or email us at computerscience(at)muohio.edu.
