Computer Science Major

The Computer Science major provides graduates with a thorough understanding of the key principles and practices of computing, and the mathematical and scientific principles that underpin them. The program emphasizes software design and development. Topics of study include programming languages, algorithms, computer architecture, operating systems, and applications of computer science such as database systems, artificial intelligence, and computer networks. Students will also learn the relevant aspects of mathematics, including calculus, discrete mathematics and probability and statistics. Graduates of the program can apply these principles and practices to a variety of problems, and also reflect on the social, professional and ethical considerations related to computing. Students learn to work in teams and to communicate effectively.

In addition to an in-depth technical knowledge, a computer science major builds on a broad education and a sense of how computer science is used and how it affects people and society. Consequently, the curriculum integrates course work in computer science, mathematics, probability and statistics, oral and written ommunication, the liberal arts, and science.

Upon entering this program, you should have an interest in analytical thinking and problem solving, an aptitude for mathematics, and an interest in working with computers and technology.

Students have the opportunity to gain experience in their profession by choosing the co-op program in which students alternate semesters of study with semesters of work in industry, or through summer internships. Additionally, the University employs many students as laboratory assistants, program debuggers, and grading assistants.

Students also have the opportunity to become involved in the student organizations of the Association for Computing Machinery(ACM), Association for Women in Computing(AWC), Black Data Processing Associates(BDPA), and Omega Rho (Operations Research Honorary).

Graduates typically work as a software engineer, consultant, programmer/analyst, computer scientist, systems programmer, or database administrator. Other graduates continue their education in graduate school.
