Student Organizations

Your opportunity to get involved at Miami is limited only by your time and desire! Computer Science and Systems Analysis majors are involved with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Association for Women in Computing (AWC), Black Data Processors Associates (BDPA), Omega Rho, Special Interest Groups (SIG), and the Student Advisory Council as well as many other non-major organizations.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)

A national, professional, computer science organization. Faculty and students meet monthly to hear industry speakers discuss the latest issues in the world of systems analysis. The group is also responsible for the department's annual high school programming contest held each spring. Microsoft is a sponser of the contest and donates prizes for winners and participants.

The department has it's own Programming Team that particicpates in the ACM East Central Collegiate Programming Contest. Approximately 100 teams attend this contest. Please contact Dr. Michael Zmuda if you are interested in joining the Programming Team.

Association for Computing Machinery-Women

The ACM-W is the ACM committee on Women in Computing. Miami has its own student chapter of the ACM-W to celebrate, inform and support our women in computing. For more information on our chapter, contact Dr. Valerie Cross.

Benton Information Technology Solutions (BITS)

BITS is our student-run computer business. The BITS students design and develop web sites and custom computer solutions for clients on the Miami campus. Not only is does BITS provide part-time jobs for the BITS students, but it provides a hand-on experience in running a business for our students.

Special Interest Groups (SIG's)

SIGCluster -- A group interested in building and using cluster computers.

SIGLinux is the Special Interest Group on GNU/Linux, the free and open source alternative operating system. It is a student organization for discussion about free software and help for new users, similar to Linux User Groups (LUGs.) Though Linux is the main focus, other *nixes such as BSD and Mac OS X are fair play too.

Student Advisory Council

The Student Advisory Council consists of students that meet on a regular basis with the head of our department. This group provides advice and leadership when it comes to hiring new professors, forming student organizations such as BITS, and sponsoring social events for our students, such as Paintball and game nights.
