Co-ops & Internships

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering provides students majoring in our programs the opportunity to gain practical work experience in their field of study through working in industry. The department offers two different programs: Co-op and Internship. Participation in either of these programs is by student choice.

The co-op/internship experience is very beneficial to the student, employer, and the academic department. The work experience makes a student's classroom instruction more meaningful, provides valuable student financial aid, and makes graduates more attractive to an employer because they are better prepared for an entry-level position. Participating employers have the opportunity to work with highly motivated, energetic engineering students who they can help develop into more competent graduates. This early contact with students in a work setting allows employers the opportunity to train potential future employees on the uniqueness of the companies' operations.

Co-op Program

The Co-op Program requires 5 years to complete the degree. Students generally schedule their first assignment for the summer or fall after their sophomore year and alternate terms between school and work for a total of 3-4 work terms. Some companies do allow co-ops to begin their work assignments following their freshman year.

We currently have more companies wanting co-ops than we have studentings willing to fill those positions. If you want to find out more about our Co-op Program, please contact one of the people listed below.

Internship Program

The Internship Program is normally for one work assignment, on occasion a student is asked to return for a second work assignment. An internship is a full-time work experience for a semester or summer term. It allows the company to hire a student to work on a special project or to fill a short-term need. If you want to find out more about our Internship Program, please contact the Office of Career Services located on Western Campus, 241 Hoyt Hall, 513-529-3831. It is only a 5 minute walk from the Shriver Center.
