ECE 461/561 Network Modeling

Description:

Modeling and performance analysis of computer and communication networks including delay and occupancy models in networks, architectures, transmission media, multiple-access, switching, and protocols.  Emphasis on lower layer network performance.

Prerequisites:

ECE 345 or STA 301 or STA 368

Objectives:

  • To provide students with a solid understanding of the models and the performance analysis tools used for computer and communication networks.
  • To expose the students toperformance analysis and optimization problems that arise in networks, thereby strengthening the link between the fundamental mathematics and practical engineering applications.
  • To prepare the students for future independent understanding of more advanced topics in networks.

Topics:

  • Students will be divided into groups of two and assigned a specific topic from the textbook.  It will be the responsibility o fthat team to present a lecture to the remaining students on that topic.  The performance of the team will be evaluated by both the instructor and the remaining students.
  • A set of current research topics in the aea of networking will be given to the class. Students may choose to work individually or in groups of two on this project.  Each undergraduate team will select a topic and prepare a report on the principles, techniques, and applications related to the topic. Graduate students/teams will be expected to do more advanced work for their project.
