New Building Website

To Prospective Paper and Chemical Engineering Students:

Welcome to the Paper and Chemical Engineering Department web pages at Miami University. The Department offers three distinct majors in Chemical Engineering (concentrations in biochemical, environmental, and paper engineering), Paper Science and Engineering and Engineering Management (technical specialty in paper and environmental engineering). We feel that the programs offered by the Department provide excellent opportunities to mathematics and science-oriented students. It gives the students a very strong science foundation with courses in chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science and chemical engineering, in addition to special courses in paper science.

Opportunities after graduation are excellent. In good economic times, many of our seniors have accepted positions before graduation, typically with an average starting salary ranging from $45,000-$58,000 per year in recent times. Others are placed soon after graduation. Our overall placement percentage has been essentially 100% for the last eleven years. Advancement after graduation is a function of many personal factors, but Miami Alumni do very well. We also have students continue their education in science, engineering, medicine, law and business.

We have a full-fledged industry co-op program available to our students. Co-op and internship work experience is very valuable in identifying the career area of most interest to the student. It also is viewed as the kind of experience essential in obtaining permanent placement by many corporate recruiters.

The Miami University Paper Science and Engineering Foundation awards Scholarships to students having good academic records, and who elect to enroll in the paper science classes of the three programs in chemical engineering, paper science and engineering, and engineering management offered by the Department.

Opportunities for international studies are available through the Department's collaboration with the Helsinki University of Technology. Students can also elect to spend a semester of study at the Luxemburg campus of Miami University.

When you are a senior in high school and planning to enter Miami in August, there are two admission deadlines of which you should be aware. First, those students who wish to be eligible for early decision admission must submit a completed application by November 1. Second, students who desire to be considered for regular admission must apply by January 31. A high school information packet will be forwarded upon your request.

I will be happy to provide any additional information that you may need. I invite you to visit our facilities located in the brand new Engineering Building when you are in the Oxford area.

Sincerely,

Dr. Shashi Lalvani
